Steven R. Garfin, M.D.

Steven R. Garfin, M.D. is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Garfin’s training included: medical school at the University of Minnesota, Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at UCSD, and a spine surgery fellowship at Pennsylvania hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Garfin has received numerous research awards, including: Volvo award from ISSLS (x2), North American Spine Society (x2), Cervical Spine Research Society (x2) and the Orthopaedic Research Society New Investigator Recognition Award. Dr. Garfin has also been awarded the Wiltse Award for Leadership from NASS and the Selby Award for Contributions to NASS. Dr. Garfin is a member of: the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon, American Orthopaedic Association, Cervical Spine Research Society, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, North American Spine Society, the Orthopaedic Research Society, and the Spinal Arthroplasty Society. For several of these Dr. Garfin has been a board member, President and/or Program Chair. Dr. Garfin has edited 18 books, and authored over 100 book chapters and 250 peer review articles. Dr. Garfin is Deputy Editor of Spine and a reviewer for a number of orthopaedic and spine peer-review journals.

William P. Cooney III, M.D.

William P. Cooney III, M.D. is professor of orthopaedics at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. Dr. Cooney received his medical education at St. Louis University, the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and the University of Michigan. Dr. Cooney is a hand surgeon with a particular interest in congenital anomalies of the hand and upper extremity. A Kappa Delta Award winner (1984), Dr. Cooney has been active in both the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and a number of orthopaedic associations, including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Orthopaedic Research Society and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation. Dr. Cooney is the author of 169 peer-reviewed journal articles and 64 book chapters, as well as the editor or primary author of several books. Dr. Cooney is also the current editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).

Giles R. Scuderi, M.D.

Giles R. Scuderi, M.D. is a Director of the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, New York City. Dr. Scuderi has edited several textbooks, including The Patella, Sports Medicine: Principles of Primary Care, and Surgical Techniques in Total Knee Arthroplasty, and serves on the editorial board of The American Journal of Knee Surgery. Active as well in The Knee Society, the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America, Dr. Scuderi has published and lectured widely on sports medicine and surgical reconstruction of the knee. Dr. Scuderi is also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, NY. Dr. Scuderi is an undergraduate from St. John’s University and received his medical education from SUNY Downstate Mecical Center in 1982.

Robert E. Hunter, M.D.

Robert E. Hunter, M.D. is a Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Arizona (UA) Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. A former team physician for the U.S. Men's Alpine Ski Team, Dr. Hunter also serves as director of the UA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and as a team physician for the UA, Pima Community College and area high schools. Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery since 1981, Dr. Hunter is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; the Arthroscopy Association of North America; and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, among others. Dr. Hunter received his undergraduate degree at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. He earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1975, completing his internship at Virginia Mason Clinic and Hospital, Seattle, Wash. Dr. Hunter completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Minnesota (1976-80), and subsequently completed a fellowship in sports medicine.

Kenneth J. Koval, M.D.

Kenneth J Koval, M.D. is currently Chief of the Orthopaedic trauma service and a Professor of Orthopaedics at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon NH. Previously Dr. Koval was Chief of the Fracture Service at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City and Professor of Orthopaedics at NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Koval, an author of more than 250 papers and several books, has written extensively on all aspects of fracture management with an emphasis on hip fractures and fracture outcomes in the elderly. Dr. Koval was an American Orthopaedic Association (ABC) Traveling fellow in 1997 and was awarded the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Clinical Research Award in 2002 for his work on hip fractures. Dr. Koval received his medical education from New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY, 1984.
